After previously playing for the Western Force, Sydney University and the Shute Shield, he now plays hooker for Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby. In August 2011, he signed with Gloucester RFC, an English club. He played there only for part of the 2011-12 Northern hemisphere season. After that, he returned to Australia to pursue his dream to play with the Wallabies.

Charles received his next chance to play in the Wallabies’ second Test match against France in June 2014. He was named to the bench after sustaining a knee injury to Stephen Moore.
