Hartman was a Canadian junior hockey player with the Belleville Bulls, North Bay Centennials and Ontario Hockey League. He accumulated 102 points and 473 penalties minutes in 138 games. Hartman represented the United States in the 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He also played for the Sabres that year, scoring six points in 17 National Hockey League games. Hartman and his teammate Ed Olczyk were initially left out of the 1994 Stanley Cup because they didn’t play in the 41 regular-season games or the 1 finals game. Rangers protested that Hartman and Olczyk had been injured and should have been on the Stanley Cup. NHL later agreed to add their names.
