Orwa Nyrabia is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on December 16, 1977 in Homs, Syria. Orwa Nyrabia (Arabic: rw@lnyrby@; born 16 December 1977) is an independent Syrian documentary film festival producer, director filmmaker and trainer. She is also a human rights activist and co-founder of the DOX BOX International Documentary Film Festival in Syria. Nyrabia has been a resident in Berlin, Germany, since 2013’s end. January 2018, Nyrabia was appointed director of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

Nyrabia’s contribution to the creation of Syrian filmmakers international Call in April of 2011 which was the Syrian protests’ first official statement from a professional group is widely recognized as being central. This call was signified by nearly 70 Syrian filmmakers, who invited filmmakers across the globe to join in calling for the establishment of democracy in Syria. Stars like Juliette Binoche, Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Mike Leigh were among more than a thousand film professionals who took part in the contest.

Since Razan Zaitouneh was abducted late 2013 in Douma, near Damascus, by an unknown group of extremists, Nyrabia became the temporary Acting Director of the organization she founded and directed, Center for Documentation of Violations in Syria (VDC).

In 2013, while residing in Egypt., Nyrabia produced the documentary film Return to Homs, by Syrian filmmaker Talal Derki, and the film became the very first film from the Arab World to open the prestigious IDFA, in November 2013., Return To Homs won many awards including the Grand Jury Prize of 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Nyrabia earned a bachelor’s acting degree in the Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts in Damascus, Syria. From 1997 to 2002 Nyrabia often wrote for the Lebanese weekly As-Safir. He also was a star on Yousry Nasrallah’s “The Gate of Sun”. The film, which was a re-imagining of the novel by Elias Khoury with the same title it was shown in 2004 at the Cannes Film Festival. Nyrabia was also involved in several feature films as a primary assistant director.

Nyrabia was educated as film producer at INA/Sorbonne located in France. He graduated in 2002 and founded Proaction Films, the first independent film production and distribution firm in Syria. Together with his partner and his wife Diana El Jeiroudi, created DOX BOX in early 2008. The festival, which is an international film festival rapidly grew into the most important gathering for documentary films throughout the Arab World. The festival began with screenings at Damascus cinemas, but from 2009 onwards, screenings were extended to additional Syrian cities like Homs as well as Tartus. In addition to the festival’s annual events, a variety of workshops and events were provided at no cost to the youngsters Syrian filmmakers. This year’s festival was the fifth, which was scheduled for the month of March, 2012, canceled because of the Syrian government’s repression of protesters during the current Syrian protests. The festival instead, Nyrabia advocated for Syrian documentary films to be screened at festivals across the globe as part of”the “Dox Box Global Day.” The purpose, according to the DOX BOX website, was to demonstrate “how poverty, oppression and isolation do not prevent humans from being spectacularly brave, stubborn and dignified.” The work of DOX BOX earned him and his co-worker, Diana El Jeiroudi, various awards such as an award called the Katrin Cartlidge Award and the European Documentary Award in 2012.

Nyrabia was reportedly arrested at Damascus International Airport by Syrian authorities on 23 August 2012. His family lost contact with him shortly before he was supposed to board an EgyptAir flight to Cairo. The airline company confirmed that Nyrabia did not board their flight. He was reportedly released on 12 September. Later on, Nyrabia announced on his personal Facebook page that the Syrian Military Intelligence was responsible for his detention. Nyrabia was released following an international filmmakers’ campaign for his freedom, in which thousands of film professionals from around the world demanded his freedom in the media. These included Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Charlotte Rampling, Kevin Spacey, Juliette Binoche and many others. The campaign was a rare example of successful pressure on the Syrian government, as it was the reason why he was released without charges. Following his release, Nyrabia published a letter of thanks to everybody who participated in the campaign
