Timmons-Goodson was inducted into North Carolina Women’s Hall of Fame in the year 2010. In 2014 the President Barack Obama appointed her to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. She has been Vice Chair of the Commission from 2015.
She delivered the Frank Porter Graham Lecture on Excellence for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill honorary society, the Order of the Golden Fleece, on March 29, 2019.
In 2019, Timmons-Goodson filed to run for the United States House of Representatives seat representing North Carolina’s 8th congressional district in 2020.

Timmons-Goodson was born Florence, South Carolina, the daughter of an U.S. Army enlisted man (Sergeant First Class) and a homemaker. She was born on military bases in both the United States and Europe. She was a student at in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in speech in the year 1976. She earned an Juris Doctor in 1979 from the University of North Carolina School of Law. She earned the Master of Laws degree in Judicial Studies from Duke University School of Law. She was appointed as a District Court judge in 1984 She was then chosen in the form of an Democrat to four-year term as District Judge in 1986, 1989, and 1994. In 1997 she was appointed by Gov. Jim Hunt to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. She resigned from the court in the late year of 2005. On the 19th of January of the 19th of January, 2006 North Carolina Governor Mike Easley appointed her to the North Carolina Supreme Court to replace associate justice Sarah Parker. After she took her seat in February of 2006 she became one of the very first African American woman to serve on the Court. It was her choice by people of the Court in November 2006, and defeated judge Eric Levinson. The judge announced during November of 2012 she was going to quit her post before the closing in the calendar year. Court of Appeals Judge Cheri Beasley was chosen to fill her spot.
On April 28, 2016, President Obama nominated Timmons-Goodson to serve as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, to the seat vacated by Judge Malcolm Jones Howard, who took senior status on December 31, 2005. Her nomination expired on January 3, 2017, with the end of the 114th Congress.
