Michael Earl Glenis McDonald Gilkes, a former English footballer, was born 20 July 1965 in Hackney. He was a left- winger, playing for Reading most prominently. He was also an international from Barbados.

Gilkes played for the Royals for nearly 13 years, scoring 52 goals. He was then sold to Wolves by Mark McGhee, who had left Reading to Wolves 16-months earlier.

Since retiring from the game, Gilkes Is employed as a Mortgage Consultant for a Reading-based estate agent. Gilkes joined the firm in November 2008 and is now a fully qualified mortgage consultant working out of the Reading branch. He was recruited by his former boss Mick Gooding – the Reading midfielder who went on to manage the club from 1994 to 1996. Gooding is now responsible for the day-to-day running of the estate agency.

Gilkes was Head Coach of Southern league Division One South & West side Hungerford Town alongside newly appointed manager Bobby Wilkinson until November 2012.

Before Keith Stevens signed him to Millwall, he spent two seasons at Molineux. He was not as successful at Molineux than he was at Elm Park. However, he was close to winning the Premier League with them, just like he had at Reading. Just weeks before the 1996-97 season ended, he joined Wolves. They were pushed out of the automatic promotion places by Barnsley and lost to Crystal Palace during the playoffs. They finished ninth in the FA Cup semi-finals, but missed out on the playoffs a year later.

Gilkes scored in the Simod Cup semi-final (Full Members Cup) v Coventry City on 2 March 1988. They reached the playoff final with a 2-0 lead that they held until the 75th minute. However, they lost 4-3 to Bolton Wanderers in extra time.

In a vote to compile the Royals’ best-ever eleven, Gilkes was voted the best left-winger with 80.6% of the vote. Gilkes played at the Madejski Stadium in the Royals Legends game on 1 May 2006.
