Broadhurst began his career in Poverty Bay’s Heartland Championship. In 2008, he was selected for the New Zealand Heartland VIII as one of the best players in the competition.
Broadhurst moved to Japan in 2009 to play in the Top League for the Kubota Sparrows. He stayed with them for one season before moving on to the Ricoh Black Rams. Broadhurst was granted residency in 2012, which allowed him to play for Japan in his first matches. He played in two matches against the French Barbarians at lock in June 2012. A try was scored in the second match. He made his full capped debut in Japan in November 2012, when he was on the bench for the victories against Georgia and Romania.
His younger brother James Broadhurst was also a professional rugby player until his retirement in 2017. James is also a former All Black.
