Matthew Carraro was born at Gosford in New South Wales. He is the nephew to David Carraro, an ex-Avoca and Manly tighthead player. He was a student at Hunters Hill’s St Joseph’s College and was chosen for the 2002 Australian Schools team.
After one season on a rookie contract with Brumbies, Carraro joined the Waratahs. Carraro was selected to represent Australia A in the 2008 Pacific Nations Cup.
He joined with French club Toulon as a replacement for the injured Ayumu Goromaru for the 2016–17 Top 14 season but was then signed on to a full season contract, for what was his last season of professional rugby.
