Joseph Norman Alessi (born September 20th 1959) is an American classical trombonist. He is currently the Principal Trombone for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and an instructor/clinician, soloist and recording artist.

Alessi made his debut as a soloist as a member of his orchestra New York Philharmonic in 1990 when he sang in the Fantasy for Trombone by Paul Creston. The following year, Alessi appeared alongside the New York Philharmonic in the world premiere of the Trombone Concerto composed by Christopher Rouse, which later was awarded the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Alessi has since forged an busy solo performance career appearing across all over the United States and internationally. His discography comprises more than 14 albums of full length, and also guest appearances on albums performed by other artists. The recordings from the Rouse Concerto are available from both the New York Philharmonic and the Colorado Symphony, both featuring Alessi as the soloist. The performance in 1999 of Star-Child written composed by George Crumb, was voted the best Classical Contemporary Composition at the 43rd Grammy Awards in 2001.

The faculty of Alessi was incorporated into the curriculum at the Juilliard School in 1986, shortly after joining the New York Philharmonic. Juilliard’s Juilliard Trombone Studio has increased its international standing in the field of best trombone colleges along with it’s Juilliard Trombone Choir has regularly performed alongside Alessi on recordings. Since 1999, Alessi has led his own Alessi Seminar; a biennial trombone workshop that draws trombonists from all over the world to join Alessi during masterclasses, lessons recitals, and masterclasses. A number of his former students have now been promoted to the top positions in orchestras around the globe.

Joseph Norman Alessi was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended high school in San Rafael, California. His father, named Joseph Alessi, was a professional trumpeter, along with his mother Maria (nee Leone) was a singer as a member of the Metropolitan Opera chorus. The twin cousin Ralph Alessi is a jazz trumpeter. He has been a notable talent since the age of a child Alessi graduated from high school when he was 16, and was selected for his first orchestra, the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra. At this point, he was as a soloist in the San Francisco Symphony. In 1976 and 1977, following an audition that was unsuccessful Alessi was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music (in Philadelphia) which is where he continued to study until the year the year 1980.

In his third year in Curtis, Alessi joined the Philadelphia Orchestra as interim Second Trombone and was later offered the position permanently and played in the Philadelphia Orchestra for four years. After one year as the Principal Trombone in the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Alessi was recruited by the New York Philharmonic as Principal Trombone in the spring of 1985.

Joseph Alessi and Swedish trombone virtuoso Christian Lindberg are widely regarded as the finest players of the instrument today, arguably the finest in history. In recognition of Alessi’s immense contributions to the world of trombone music and trombone playing, he was awarded the 2002 ITA Award; the most prestigious award offered by the International Trombone Association.
