Matousek was born in Los Angeles, California. His father, James Matousek, disappeared when he was just four years old and left the family in desperate need as was his sister Marcia took her own life in 1978. He graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Dramatic Art from the University of California, Berkeley from 1978 (Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude) as well as a Fellowship for Worcester College, Oxford in 1979 and a master’s diploma of English Literature from UCLA in 1981.
In 1981, Matousek was transferred into New York City, working as a stringer who covered popular culture for Reuters as well as in the letters department at Newsweek Magazine. Matousek is a member of PEN International and a core faculty member of Old Stone Farm, a wellness center in Staatsburg, New York.
