Kathleen “Kathy” Flores (born 7 February 1955) is a former unionist from the United States and was the head coach of the United States women’s national rugby union team from January 2011. She is currently the director of coaching for the Brown women’s team. The previous coaching assignments comprise Bay Area Touring Side (BATS) Rugby Club, the SF FOG men and the Berkeley All Blues. She played in the sport from 1978 until 1998 for Florida State University, the Berkeley All Blues Women’s Rugby Club as well as the U.S. female national teams. She began coaching Berkeley All Blues in Berkeley All Blues 1998 and was the head coach and administrator of the U.S. women’s national team since 2003. She started coaching the women’s squad at Brown University in the fall of 2013, following the departure of the extremely successful coach Kerri Heffernan.
In the year 1991, the USA Rugby sanctioned Women’s National Team was able to record 7-1 records in the first Women’s rugby World Cup tournament with Flores playing as an official no. 8.
Flores was the Pacific Coast Regional All-Star team head coach from 1995 to 2002.
In late 2002, USA Rugby announced Kathy Flores as the new head coach of the Women’s National Team. The following year she was honored with the IRB International Women’s Personality of the Year Award. “Kathy was given the Women’s Personality of the Year Award for her contribution to the game first as a player and then in her capacity as an administrator,” said IRB Communications Director Chris Rea. In 2007 Flores accepted a two-year extension of her contract as head coach.
Flores made a tour of England and France as the first official U.S. national team in 1986, dubbed WIVERN. It was the U.S. Women’s National Team was the first team to make an official appearance in the Can-Am Rugby Tournament in 1987. With Flores with a cap of the number. 8 and captain, the U.S. defeated Canada 22-3 and for the purpose of which Flores scored a touchdown. It was 1990 and the New Zealand Rugby Festival saw Flores and eight of her USA teammates selected as members of the World XV team.

Flores is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and calls Tallahassee, Florida her hometown. She was a student at Monmouth Regional High School in New Jersey, where she played basketball, field hockey and was a track runner. In her time in East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, Flores played basketball (guard) and was on the track team (javelin). She graduated with an B.S. diploma in Physical Education in the year 1977. In 1997, Flores was admitted into the ESU hall of fame for her achievements in athletics in her college years.
In 1978, Flores began a masters course for exercise physiology. She attended Florida State University where she found the Seminoles FSU’s Women’s Rugby team. In a way, she drew inspiration from her time as a track and basketball player, Flores showed the finesse as well as athleticism required for the game. Flores was a number Eight as well as scrum-half for Seminoles and was the winner of the team a total of four National Championships.
Flores moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1994, where she started playing for the Berkeley All Blues. In 1998 Flores officially retired from playing rugby, and began a career in coaching as the Berkeley All Blues head coach. In 2007, she retired as head coach of the All Blues to focus on the national team. The Berkeley All Blues won a total of 15 National Championship titles with Flores playing a key role, either as a player or coach. Flores also coached the Cal Women’s college rugby team from 1998 to 2004.
