Born in Perth in Perth, the daughter of Margaret Mercer Blackburn (1920-90) and George Everard Blackburn (1917-82) and younger sibling to Dr. Gregory Blackburn (born 30 May 1947), Estelle Blackburn spent her early time at Northam, Western Australia.
John Button’s brother who met Blackburn at a party on November 21, 1991, challenged that his older brother was blamed for a murder by Eric Cooke. While skeptical, Blackburn was skeptical, he met John Button in February 1992. After hearing his testimony , and studying the appeals books he had kept from previous court proceedings and deciding that his case was an appropriate theme for a novel.
Blackburn assisted in the preparation of the appeal cases for John Button and Darryl Beamish and acted as media liaison for the defence team. In 2002, the conviction of John Button for manslaughter was quashed with Darryl Beamish’s wilful murder conviction being quashed in 2005.
In 2007, Blackburn’s next book, The End of Innocence, was published. A partial autobiography (memoir), it revisited the topics covered in Broken Lives and told the story of the investigation which produced it. This work contained a background story of Blackburn’s own experience of violence at the time of writing her first book. This attracted media attention and led to further appearances on radio and television programmes (including a return to Australian Story in November 2007 ‘Look Before You Leap’).
She was in 1974 when she traveled to Europe and contributed a few articles to Western Australian journals as a freelance journalist. In 1980 her return to Perth and was employed by the ABC as reporter for TV and radio. The year 1985 saw her asked to take on a job at the Media Office within the WA government. The position was that of Media advisor for minister of police and local government Jeff Carr, and later Gordon Hill. Then, in 1990 she was promoted to media advisor junior in The office of Premier of Western Australia, Carmen Lawrence up until the demise by the Lawrence government in 1993.

Her father’s job as a manager of personnel with AMP Limited required the family to move back home to Perth where she was a student at the Floreat Primary Elementary School from 1956, and Presbyterian Ladies College Primary School from 1957 until 1961. She continued to attend and finished the high education at Methodist Ladies’ College in Perth from 1962 until 1967, receiving the Western Australian High School Leaving Certificate with distinctions in the subject areas of English as well as Music.
In the end, she was unsuccessful in her initial attempt to get a journalism- related cadetship from West Australian Newspapers she was offered a job with the newspaper as clerks in the library of the newspaper, which she held during three months. The year was 1968 when she was awarded an Commonwealth Government scholarship that allowed her to study at an undergraduate program at the University of Western Australia as full-time students. She was accepted into the journalism cadetship program in the year 1969. While working at WA Newspapers, she completed her BA of Arts degree part-time with two majors in the fields of psychology and anthropology. She progressed through general information and features to the coverage for the sessions in the WA state legislature.
Following the initial publication of Broken Lives in 1998, Blackburn became the recipient of a number of awards, the most significant being the Medal of the Order of Australia and a Walkley Award. Renewed public interest in the cases led to several appearances in the electronic media, including two on ABC Television’s high-profile programme, Australian Story, in 1998 ‘Dancing with Strangers’ and 2002 ‘Murder He Wrote’ and on USA’s Forensic Files ‘Dueling Confessions’. This increased media profile afforded an opportunity to engage in paid public speaking and invitations to contribute to true-crime anthologies.
