Cheng visited China as part of the 40 Year Anniversary of Australia-China Diplomatic Relations, touring Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Tianjin and Beijing in 2012.

While at university in 2007, Cheng founded Nudge, the company that provided reminders through text or phone message to help users manage their drug prescriptions. She was awarded a prize as the top student business in the University of Melbourne and then began collaborating with friends to create workshops to educate girls about robotics. This evolved into Robogals and was created in 2008 with the aim of guiding young women to career paths within STEM fields. Cheng then graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in mechatronics, as well as an Associate in Computer Science.

Cheng helped decide on startup investments alongside Eddie McGuire as a board member of RMIT University’s New Enterprise Investment Fund (2014-2017), and supported the Victorian startup ecosystem as a board member of the Victorian State Innovation Expert Panel (2016-2018). She was also involved with the Clinton Health Access Initiative as Technology Advisory Board Member (2016-2017).
