Egerstedt received a Ph.D. from Applied Mathematics in 2000 under the guidance of Xiaoming Hu, Anders Lindquist and worked on the thesis Motion Planning & Control of Mobile Robots. Egerstedt, a graduate of the Center for Autonomous Systems at KTH was an associate.
Egerstedt was appointed Executive Director of the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines in 2016. This position he held for two-years. Egerstedt created the Robotarium in 2017, a swarm-robotic research testing bed whose purpose is to offer researchers worldwide access to a state of the art test facility.
The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the United States. Hightower chair in Systems and Controls (2016), and Associate Chair in Research (2014-2016). Egerstedt was named the Steve W. Chaddick School chair of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in August 2018. Egerstedt also holds adjunct positions in the School of Interactive Computing and the Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering. He is also a member of the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology.
