Marinelli’s parents divorced at the tender age of five. His father and stepmother took Marinelli out of Buffalo and moved him to Newfane, a small community near Lake Ontario, in Niagara County in 1997. Marinelli moved to Tonawanda, a suburb of Buffalo in New York, three years later. He had just completed eighth grade at Newfane Middle School. In 2004, he graduated from Tonawanda High School.
Marinelli, who had earned a TEFL certificate, moved to Samara in October 2007 to become an ESL teacher at a private language school. Marinelli was offered a job as an ESL teacher at a Kazan school.
The 2010 Summer for Marriage Tour was a political bus tour that traveled 10,000 miles in thirty days, stopping in 21 cities in 17 states across the United States. Marinelli traveled the country alongside the organization’s president, Brian Brown, and CEO Maggie Gallagher, rallying support against the spread of same-sex marriage. Attendance at these rallies were generally low and none of them attracted much fanfare.
A few months after the Summer for Marriage Tour, in December 2010, Marinelli broke ranks with the National Organization for Marriage by announcing his support for the repeal of Don’t ask, don’t tell days before Congress repealed it. On April 11, 2011, Marinelli announced his support for marriage equality, his resignation from the National Organization for Marriage and issued a very public apology to the LGBT community for his years of anti-gay activism. In the months immediately following this announcement, Marinelli proceeded to publish confidential information about his knowledge of the inner workings of the National Organization for Marriage under direct threat from Brian Brown of legal action for violation of a confidentiality agreement.
Marinelli felt that the Democratic Party had shifted too far left when it chose John Kerry to replace his favorite candidate John Edwards, who he felt was more moderate on social issues. Marinelli started a Facebook group called “Protect marriage: One Man, one woman” in 2006. It grew to be the largest social media network for social conservatives opposed to legalizing same-sex marriage in America. Marinelli’s “Protect Marriage” network grew to be so popular that, in 2009, Marinelli’s “Protect Marriage”, one man, one woman, network merged with National Organization for Marriage. Marinelli was paid to become a strategist for the organization (often working remotely in Russia), and was the brainchild of the 2010 Summer for Marriage Tour, which he returned to America to take part in.

Louis J. Marinelli, born March 28, 1986 in America, is a political activist for the California independence movement. He is the founder of the Yes California Independence Campaign. This umbrella organization represents the coalition of organizations and parties that support the planned 2019 California independence referendum. Marinelli is the current president of Yes California. He was also the interim chairman of California National Party. Under his leadership, he ran for California State Assembly in California’s 80th State Assembly District representing South San Diego, National City and Chula Vista. He moved to Yekaterinburg in Russia in 2016, but now resides at Moscow, Russia.
Marinelli’s first experience in politics was through his volunteer work in 2004 with the John Edwards presidential campaign, in the Iowa Democratic Caucuses. Marinelli, 17 years old, boarded a train from Depew, New York to reach Osceola, Iowa, weeks before the caucuses began. Marinelli was one of hundreds of volunteers from the United States that traveled to Iowa in the same year to help the campaign. In return for a promise of accommodation and board, he joined many others. Marinelli participated in the campaign’s GOTV efforts in Newton, Iowa during the weeks preceding the Iowa Democratic Caucuses. He was also a precinct Captain for John Edwards that night, when he finished second behind eventual Democratic Party nominee John Kerry. Marinelli was invited to continue the campaign to New Hampshire but had to return home to Tonawanda to attend his high school’s early graduation ceremony.
In 2009, Marinelli relocated to Saint Petersburg, Russia where he began working as an English teacher and became a student of Russian language at Saint Petersburg State University. He left Russia together in the spring of 2011 and returned to California with his Russian fiancée.
