Marcia Langton is one of the most popular and richest Anthropologist who was born on October 31, 1951 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Marcia Langton was the daughter of Kathleen (nee Waddy), and was born in 1951. She grew up in south central Queensland and Brisbane as a descendant from the Yiman and Bidjara tribes. Her father was absent from her life. Marcia, a year old, was married to Douglas Langton, a Scots-born veteran of the Korean War.

She was one of five Indigenous leaders granted an audience with Queen Elizabeth II in 1999 to discuss the proposal for Indigenous Australians being recognized in the Australian constitution.

In May 2008, the federal government appointed her to a committee looking into reform of the Australian native title process.

She has argued that settlement with mining companies on Aboriginal land often benefits local interests more than the Australian government, and that the proposed 2010 Resource Tax on mining in Australia needed a redesign to support Indigenous rights and employment.

She moved full-time to university teaching and research in 1995. Before moving to Melbourne, she was the Ranger Professor of Aboriginal Studies and Torres Strait Islander Studies at Northern Territory University (now Charles Darwin University).

Marcia Lynne Langton Am (born 31 Oct 1951 in Brisbane, Australia) is the Foundation Chair for Australian Indigenous Studies at University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine. She was named Distinguished Professor in 2016 and Associate Provost in 2017.

Langton returned to Australia in 1980 and studied anthropology at Australian National University. She was the first Indigenous honors graduate in anthropology. Langton worked for several organizations dealing with Indigenous cultural and social issues as well as land claims. She worked with the Australian Film Commission and the Central Land Council, where she was a land claim anthropologist. The Queensland Government also employed her. In the 1990s, the Cape York Land Council was established. She was a member the Northern Territory Aboriginal Issues Unit and worked on the 1989 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. Her report “Too Much Sorry Business” raised serious concerns about alcohol consumption, and the lack of government action to curb it. “From an Aboriginal perspective and the Aboriginal experience, alcohol plays a primary part in both the causes of detention and the subsequent deaths.” It was concluded that the alcohol supply must be limited. She supported the Northern Territory National Emergency Response almost 20 years later. It policed, among other things, alcohol consumption and sales.

Her 2005 PhD thesis in geography at Macquarie University applies phenomenological theory to the study of Aboriginal peoples of the eastern Cape York Peninsula.
