Giovanni Russo was her father and Emilian Giuseppina Gherardini was her mother. They worked as cashiers at “Olimpia” cinema. Her parents moved to Pavullo nel Frignano in Sicily. In 1969, her family returned to Genoa where she joined a dance school. She finished middle school in 1973. Her parents enrolled her at the Istituto Tecnico per il Turismo in Genoa. This is so she can give dance her full attention. She made sacrifices to follow the dance lessons of Wanda Nardi in Genoa, the best dance school at the time. She also started working as a model mannequin for Coin and a poster advertisement for the department store Coin.
Russo was 13 years old when she won her first major beauty contest, Miss Liguria. Russo had also won “Miss Emilia” in Pavullo nel Frignano the previous year. She then appeared in the crime movie Genova a mano armata as the cashier at the bar, and also made an appearance in Die linkshändige Frau (The Left-Handed Woman). The movie was a hit, especially in Germany, and was entered into the 1978 Cannes Film Festival.
Although Russo began her career as an actress, she continued to work as a showgirl in nightclubs, and in 1978, Russo hosted, with Ettore Andenna, the TV show La bustarella, which aired on Antenna 3 Lombardia. In the same year, she participated in Portobello with Enzo Tortora aired in Raiuno. Later, Russo appeared in many others films and debuted in the theater supporting Walter Chiari in Hai mai provato con l’acqua calda?. With this play, Russo won the Premio de Curtis. Cristina Moffa sang the original theme song (“Zucchero Zucchero”) but it was later changed to “La Bambola”, a cover of Patty Pravo’s 1968 hit. Russo then sang the song. Russo also sang the closing credits music, “Chiammame Ambresso”, written by Cristiano Maltaglio. Russo also promoted her albums Stars on Donna, and Le canzoni di ‘Drive In …”.. The show’s Le canzoni di Drive In “…’ includes a selection of Russo’s songs. One single was also released from the album, “Mi scusi Signorina”. Russo was also part of the 1984 commercial for Morositas candy.
