Eriksen is an honorary doctor at Stockholm University, a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and an External Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society. He received the University of Oslo Research Prize in 2017.
Eriksen was an unimportant political candidate of his Norwegian Liberal Party. In the local elections of 2011, he ran as an unimportant candidate for the Norwegian Green Party in Oslo. In addition, he was a minor contender in Norway’s Norwegian Green Party in the general election of 2013.
Between 2004 between 2004 and between 2004 and Eriksen led an interdisciplinarity research program called Cultural Complexity in the New Norway (CULCOM) located in the University of Oslo. In a programmatic declaration the programme’s principal objective of the programme was “redraw the map of Norway” in order to fit the current global, multi-layered and transnational world. A book that summarizes the results of CULCOM’s empirical research and theoretical insights resulting from CULCOM is called Samfunn (Society in 2010).
One quote from Eriksen made in the context of his CULCOM involvement has become a focal point in the 1,500-page manifesto of Anders Behring Breivik, the perpetrator of the 2011 Norway attacks, as well as in Breivik’s defence speech during his 2012 trial.
