His debut in class was made at the 2013 Currie Cup First Division competition. He was unable to play in the first match of the season but he played in the second against the Falcons. He made 14 appearances, and he started all of the remaining matches. He scored a dramatic injury-time try that secured a victory for the Leopards of 34 to 28. He was again the match-winner in their match against the Boland Cavaliers. The second of his two attempts came with just four minutes remaining to defeat the Cavaliers by 22-17. To end the season, he scored another brace against the Falcons. This made him joint-sixth in competition.
He was subsequently included in the Lions wider training group prior to the 2014 Super Rugby season.
In February 2015, Obi – along with fellow Leopards winger Sylvian Mahuza – started training with Port Elizabeth-based side the Eastern Province Kings, following a dispute about the validity of their contracts with the Leopards. An agreement was reached and Obi officially joined the Kings on 27 February.
He was part of the South Africa Under-20 team that competed in the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship. He scored four tries during his five appearances. He finished joint-second behind Seabelo Senatla in the try scoring charts, which helped the S.A. under-20 team to third place at the competition.

Obi was a student at St Benedict’s College, Bedfordview. He represented the Golden Lions in youth contests as a member of their Under-13 Craven Week team. Obi played for them in the 2006 Under-13 Craven Week and the 2009 Grant Khomo Week for their Under-16 team.
