Granda placed first alongside Samuel Shankland, Alexander Shabalov, Rafael Leitao, Isan Reynaldo Ortiz-Suarez as well as Alan Pichot at the 9th American Continental Chess Championship in 2014. With a higher tiebreak score , he won his gold trophy. In order to qualify for the FIDE World Cup, he played a fast playoff against the other five players who came in with a joint first. He finished second with 3/5 and was able to qualify to play in the World Cup 2015. He knocked out Alex Fier in the opening round. Then he lost against Cristobal Henriquez-Villagra the next and then fell to Radoslaw Wojtaszek in round three. In 2017 Granda took home the 50+ division at the World Senior Chess Championship in Acqui Terms, Italy.

The month of December, 2009, saw him was tied for 1st-4th Georg Meier, Viktor Laznicka and Kiril Georgiev at the 19th Magistral Pamplona Tournament. He was the winner of his 5th Torneo Abierto in Guadalajara. In 2011, he was tied for 2nd-7th place along with Aleksander Delchev, Ivan Saric, Pablo Almagro Llamas, Maxim Turov and Mihail Marin the 31st Villa de Benasque Open. The Chess World Cup 2013 in Tromso, Norway, Granda made it to round four after eliminating Hrant Melkumyan Peter Leko and Anish Giri. However, he was eliminated by Fabiano Caruana, who suffered two losses.

Born in Camana in the state of Camana, he was taught to play chess when he was just five years old. In 1980, he was the winner of the World Infant Cup in Mazatlan, Mexico. In 1984, Granda was the winner of his first Pan American Junior Championship in Lima. At the age of 19 he had earned his title Grandmaster through the FIDE The World Chess Federation, after exceeding the chess rating 2500. He placed 1st alongside Bent Larsen in Mar del Plata 1993. He has been a five-time chess champion from Peru and has won in 1994 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2002. Granda was the winner of his 4th American Continental Championship at Cali 2007 with a tie-break among the five top finishers in the first round at 8/11. This win allowed him to play in his participation in the Chess World Cup 2007 where Granda lost his opening round contest to Arkadij Naiditsch 1 1/2 -1 1/2 . In 2008, he won his 2nd Iberoamerican Championship in Linares, Spain by defeating in the final Eduardo Iturrizaga 2 1/2 -1 1/2 .
