Basson is a native of Cape Town. After graduating from high school in Cape Town Basson was a part of his first club, the Blue Bulls Academy prior to the 2013 season. He was among the first choice locks on the Blue Bulls U19 side during the 2013 Provincial Championship for Under-19 After two appearances on the bench for the first two games during their season. He played in every match which helped players of the Blue Bulls finish top of the list to make it into the play-offs for title. He was the first player to start their semi- final 37-21 victory over their opponents the Leopards U19 and also the final, where Blue Bulls won the championship. Blue Bulls finished the season with a win, claiming the title after beating Gauteng opponents Golden Lions U19 35-23 in Durban.
He played in 9 of his Free State U21 side’s thirteen matches in the 2014 U21 Provincial Championship, and was on the bench in one instance. In the final, he scored one his team’s 18 tries in the defeat of 118-6 against Border U21 in his first match at this level . He scored another one in a win of 43-21 over Sharks U21 later in the season. His team was able to finish fourth and secure a title play-off position in the title play-off. He was not a part of the semi-finals, as his team was defeated 17-41 by Western Province U21.
He was included in a Free State XV that participated in the 2015 Vodacom Cup. He made his first class debut by starting their second match of the season against Boland Cavaliers in a 52–15 victory.
