O’Rourke was once a part in Illusion of Safety, Gastr Del Sol (with David Grubbs) and Sonic Youth. Since 1999, he has played guitar, bass guitar and synthesizer in Sonic Youth, in addition to mixing and recording for the group. He quit as a band member in the latter half of 2005, however, he continued to perform with Sonic Youth in a few of their other projects.
He has produced albums by artists such as Sonic Youth, Wilco, Stereolab, Superchunk, Kahimi Karie, Quruli, John Fahey, Smog, Faust, Tony Conrad, The Red Krayola, Bobby Conn, Beth Orton, Joanna Newsom and U.S. Maple. He mixed Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album and produced their 2004 album, A Ghost Is Born, for which he won a Grammy Award for “Best Alternative Album”. During the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, O’Rourke collaborated with Wilco member Jeff Tweedy and pre-Wilco Glenn Kotche under the name Loose Fur. Their self- titled debut was released in 2003 with a follow-up in 2006 entitled Born Again in the USA. He also mixed the unfinished recordings that made up a planned third album by the late American singer-songwriter Judee Sill, recorded in 1974 and mixed by O’Rourke for a 2005 release.
He has released albums of jazz, noise, glitchy electronica and rock music. O’Rourke has collaborated with Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon, Steve Shelley, Derek Bailey, Mats Gustafsson, Mayo Thompson, Brigitte Fontaine, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Merzbow, Nurse with Wound, Phill Niblock, Fennesz, Organum, Phew, Henry Kaiser, Flying Saucer Attack, and in 2006 mixed Joanna Newsom’s album Ys. In 2009, he also mixed several tracks on Newsom’s follow up Have One On Me.
O’Rourke has also released numerous records under his name, on various labels, exploring a variety of avant-garde and electronic styles. His most famous works might be the series of albums that are titled Drag City, which focus on traditional songwriting: Bad Timing (1997), Eureka (1999), Insignificance (2001) and the Visitor (2009) as well as Simple Songs (2015). These titles on the four albums all reference films directed by British Director Nicolas Roeg; the first three albums are directly referencing films, with the fourth album being named in reference to a film album in The Man Who Fell To Earth, a film by Roeg. Jim O’Rourke (born January 18 1969) is an American artist and record producer. He has been a long-time member of his time in the Chicago experimental and the improv scene. In 2000, he moved into New York City before moving into Tokyo, Japan, and later, in the last few years moving to Yamanashi in the vicinity of Mount Fuji in the mountains where he now resides. O’Rourke is well-known for his many collaborations, both solo and with other musicians that are completely instrumental, as well as for his time as part the group Sonic Youth from 1999 to 2005.
In 1993’s, O’Rourke was part of an avant-rock band with Darin Gray as well as Dylan Posa called Brise-Glace. The group released a studio album, called When they were in Vanitas …, in 1994. They also released seven” the same year with the title In Sisters All and Felony/Angels on the Installment Plan.
O’Rourke received a 2001 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award.
