John Reis is one of the most popular and richest American musician who was born on January 1, 1969 in Ocean Beach, California, United States. Reis was born in 1969 , in San Diego’s Ocean Beach area of San Diego to Portuguese American heritage.
In 1999, Reis founded an independent record label Swami Records, primarily as an opportunity to release music from various local San Diego bands, which included many he was involved in. He also formed two other groups: Sessions with drummer Jason Kourkounis led to the creation of Hot Snakes (which also reunited Reis with Rick Froberg), while collaborations with drummer Tony Di Prima led to the creation The Sultans. Both bands focused on simplified versions of the musical formulas Reis had developed in”Rocket from the Crypt which led to Hot Snakes incorporating some of the more innovative features from Drive Like Jehu while the Sultans utilized a more conventional rock & roll method. In the years between, Reis was recording and served as producer for various groups that included Superchunk, Selby Tigers, GoGoGo Airheart, and the Red Onions. He also played occasionally with other groups, including Stacatto Reads, Custom Floor as well as Beehive and the Barracudas.
2005 marked the end of Reis’ multi-band involvement, with the breakups of Hot Snakes in July and Rocket from the Crypt on Halloween. He then focused his attention on Swami Records, putting out numerous releases that Fall and Winter and organizing tours in support of the label. He began hosting the “Swami Sound System” program on San Diego radio station 94.9 (KBZT) and continued to play with the Sultans occasionally until their disbanding in January 2007.

In 1994, Rocket from the Crypt took an extended break of six months in the meantime Reis back in the studio together with Drive Like Jehu, recording the critically highly acclaimed record Yank Crime. He also recorded an album of material on his own under the name Back Off Cupids, but the majority of his work was not released until 1999. In 1995, without much public attention, Drive Like Jehu disbanded and Reis began working together with Rocket from the Crypt full time. The band experienced a burst of inspiration that culminated in three albums during the year. The culmination was the highly acclaimed record Scream, Dracula, Scream! They gained recognition within the world of alternative music as well as filmed numerous music videos, performed on tours around the world and saw a rise of fame throughout their home country of the United Kingdom. The band released their follow-up album RFTC in 1998. However, Interscope switched their focus to bands that were more lucrative and they was dropped from the label. Then came the departure of long-time drummer Adam Willard from the group at the beginning of 2000, which resulted in a pause in which Reis pursued other music projects.

John Reis (born 1969) and is also known under various pseudonyms such as Speedo, Slasher, and The Swami, is an American musician as a singer, guitarist as well as record label owner as well as a disc jockey. He is most famously known as the guitarist and singer for the rock group Rocket from the Crypt, which he co-founded and fronted (as Speedo) for the entire time between 1990 and 2005. Prior to this , he played guitar in the post-hardcore group Pitchfork and was also a member with Drive Like Jehu during the early 1990s. In 1999, he joined The Hot Snakes, and in 2000 he also joined the Sultans with whom (as Slasher) he sang and played bass prior to changing to the rhythm guitar. Reis began his involvement with music in 1984. participating in a punk-rock group known as Conservative Itch at age 15. In 1986, he founded the post- hardcore band Pitchfork along with his friend Rick Froberg, in which was a member until the dissolution of the group in the year 1990. In the years following, he formed two new groups: Drive Like Jehu included Froberg and was more experimental one, experimenting with different styles, including post- punk math rock, post-hardcore and early 1990s EMO. Rocket from the Crypt, in contrast, was thought of as a rock group that was more back-to-basics group that also included other musicians from the San Diego area. Both bands released their debut albums in 1991 via the local label Cargo Records and Headhunter Records. Rocket from the Crypt was later revived as a punk- influenced rock and roll group with an horn section. They gained an image of being creative and lively live performances. The band released a variety of singles on vinyl and released an album titled Circa Now! in 1992. Reis the band’s involvement with Rocket from the Crypt sidelined Drive Like Jehu at this time, however both groups were soon signed to the major labels Interscope Records as a pair.
Rocket from the Crypt regrouped in 2000, signing to Vagrant Records and bringing in new drummer Mario Rubalcaba. Reis continued to record and perform with Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, and the Sultans for the next several years, dividing his time between all three groups. Between 1999 and 2005 he recorded 2 albums with Rocket from the Crypt, 2 with the Sultans, and 3 with Hot Snakes. In 2003 his younger brother Dean Reis joined him in the Sultans. Rubalcaba also became a member of all three of Reis’ bands, replacing Kourkounis in Hot Snakes in 2004 and Di Prima in the Sultans in 2006.
