He played 16 NHL seasons for six different teams and won the Stanley Cup once with Pittsburgh Penguins. Formerly, he was the manager of player growth for the NHL’s Florida Panthers.
He was traded by the Penguins to the Atlanta Thrashers on the same day as Marian Hossa was acquired from them. He helped them win their Eastern Conference title and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008. They lost six of the six games.
On June 12, 2009, Gill hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head after the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in seven games.
On June 28, 2012 Gill re-signed with the Nashville Predators on a two-year, $4 million deal. During the lockout-shortened 2012–13 season, Gill was scoreless over 32 games, as the Predators failed to reach the playoffs.

Gill played four years for Providence College after being drafted by the Boston Bruins in the eighth round. He was 207th overall in 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Gill entered the NHL in 1997-98 and played more than 600 regular season games during eight seasons with Boston Bruins. During the 2004-05 NHL lockout he played in Finland for Lukko’s SM-liiga.
Gill was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs to a three year contract on July 1, 2006. While he worked on discipline and lowering his penalties minutes, he had some of his best performances in Toronto. Toronto traded him to Pittsburgh Penguins on February 26, 2008 for a second round draft selection in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and a fifth-round pick in 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
On July 1, 2009, he signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal with the Montreal Canadiens, and after the 2010-11 season he re-signed with the Canadiens on a one-year deal.
