Hooker as a hooker, he made his debut in L’Aquila Rugby main team in 1972 and won the Coppa Italia; for years alongside teammates Italian internationals such as Ghizzoni, Cucchiella and Mascioletti and later, Bottacchiari, Colella and Pietrosanti, he was the foundation structure of the team that could win two consecutive times the scudetto during the early 1980s, and reaching the highest level of the championship, and of providing numerous key members to the Italy nation’s team.
When he was 18 years old, he played with L’Aquila, Morelli won two Scudetti as well as a Coppa Italia, in addition to the mentioned one. He was a debutant with Italy’s Italy national team in a match against France A1 but did not get a call-up till seven years on in 1982, for his second fixture (against the same team). The first time he played in a full international took place in April of 1982, against Romania.
