Tanaka was not considered one of the top players in Japan during his time at University However, after joining with the Panasonic Wild Knights in 2007 Tanaka played alongside the former All Blacks fly half Tony Brown who was widely credited with helping his development tremendously. Tanaka himself credits Brown for being among the major influencers in his professional career. Following Tanaka’s debut year with the Top League in 2007/08, Tanaka was included as a member of the team for the season with Brown and was also named as the best newcomer of 2007.

Following his good performances with Otago, he became the first ethnic Japanese player to sign a Super Rugby contract when he was named in the Highlanders squad for the 2013 season.
