After leaving Family Ties, he began to create his own TV series. These included The Pursuit of Happiness (1987), True Colors (90-1992), South Central (1994), and Ned and Stacey (95-1997).

In 2006, he co-created (with Nick Bakay) the Comedy Central animated web series The Adventures of Baxter and McGuire, an episode of which was also shown at the Sundance Film Festival.

In 2010 he wrote and directed the feature film A Little Help, which stars Jenna Fischer, Chris O’Donnell and Rob Benedict.

For his work on Cheers, he was awarded a Writer’s Guild of America Award in 1985.

Michael J. Weithorn was a Queens native who attended Port Washington high school. In 1978, he graduated from Swarthmore College with a Bachelor’s degree in political science. Swarthmore was home to several of his friends, including Neal Marlens and Carol Black, who both went west in 1978 to work in the entertainment industry. Robert Newmyer, a late film producer, also produced “Sex, Lies and Videotape, Training Day”. After three years of teaching high school in Los Angeles, Weithorn was offered a writing job on the 1981 episode of Benson. He turned down an opportunity to be part of Late Night With David Letterman’s original writing staff in order to join Gary David Goldberg’s Family Ties production team. Weithorn served as a story consultant, then producer on 102 Family Ties episodes. He also wrote 26 episodes during his time on the show. He also wrote episodes for Cheers and other TV shows during that time.

Weithorn’s work has been honored many times, including five Emmy nominations. He was also nominated for an Emmy in 1984 for his work on Family Ties with other producers. He was again nominated for Family Ties a year later, this time in the Category Outstanding Comedy Series. He was nominated in 1986 for two Emmys, one for production and one for Outstanding Writing In A Comedy Series. He was also nominated in 1989 for another Emmy for his writing work on The Wonder Years. He was nominated in 2007 for the Daytime Emmy for Best Outstanding Broadband Programm- Comedy for The Adventures of Baxter and McGuire. His film A Little Help won the best feature award at many major film festivals in 2010.

In 1998, he created The King of Queens with David Litt. The show ran until 2007, when Weithorn wrote the finale hour-long episode, “China Syndrome”.
