Derek Robert Whitmore (born December 17th 1984) is an American professional ice hockey player who is currently a non-restricted free agent. He was most recently a player with the Reading Royals in the ECHL.
Whitmore chose to go back to Germany during the off-season, signing a one-year deal as an unrestricted free player in the Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL on the 26th of August in 2014. In the 2014-15 campaign with the Roosters, Whitmore although hampered with injuries at times and injuries, scored the scoring of 16 goals in just 35 games.
On July 27, 2016, Whitmore decided to return to Germany and the DEL, agreeing to a one-year deal with the Straubing Tigers.
After three seasons abroad, Whitmore returned to North America as a free agent before agreeing to an ECHL contract with the Reading Royals on August 24, 2017.
On July 7th, 2013 Whitmore utilized an out-clause on his new contract with Augsburger for a return in North America with NHL aspirations. Whitmore was given year-long AHL agreement for the Hershey Bears the following day. The 2013-14 season was when Whitmore was released to a loan deal from to the Bears with the Adirondack Phantoms on March 12 the 12th of March, 2014.

After spending four seasons in Bowling Green State University, He signed a professional agreement for the Sabres on the 26th of March 2008. On July 14, 2010, Whitmore was signed by the Sabres for one year as an unrestricted free agent. 7 July 2011, Whitmore was re-signed to an one-year deal from Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo Sabres. Whitmore was able to make his NHL debut for the team on the 20th of December the 20th of December.
In with the 2012-13 campaign, Whitmore signed a try-out contract with the St. John’s IceCaps of the AHL which is an affiliate from the Winnipeg Jets. After seven matches, the player was let go from the contract and left to Germany signing the rest of the season with Augsburger Panther of the DEL on November 28, 2012. Whitmore had 23 points over 26 games for his Panthers and was awarded an extension of one year.
On May 21, 2015, Whitmore left the Roosters as a free agent to join Austrian club, the Vienna Capitals of the EBEL on a one-year contract. In his one season in Austria, Whitmore appeared in 36 games with the Capitals, providing 19 points.
