In 1998, she was elected in a byelection after Norman West’s resignation. She was elected to the European Parliament (MEP) for Yorkshire and the Humber from 1998, when she was first elected in a by-election following the resignation of Norman West.

McAvan was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety from 2004 to 2014. She drafted the 2009 European Parliament report on medicine safety monitoring. Between 2007 and 2009, she was also part of the Temporary Climate Change Committee. In this capacity, she participated in the delegations of the Parliament to the United Nations Climate Change Conference at Poznan 2008 and the United Nations Climate Change Conference at Copenhagen 2009.

She supported Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour Party (UK) leadership election.

Labour Party members elected McAvan to be the top-ranked Labour candidate [1] for Yorkshire and the Humber in the 2009 European elections, narrowly beating Richard Corbett for the top place. In 2014, she again topped the ballot. She stood down as a MEP on 19 April 2019.

McAvan was one of 16 European Parliament representatives in the Convention on the Future of Europe between 2002 and 2003. He was led by the former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing.
