Tessier was a major junior player with his time in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in which he was a player captain of the team for Ottawa 67’s. After establishing his faceoffs success as a key part of the game, he received with the OHL Top Faceoff Award in the first three years of the award between 1998 and 2000 in addition to winning the CHL Top Faceoff Award in 1999. After a 84-point year in 1998-99 Tessier was the team’s leader in guiding the 67’s to an OHL Memorial Cup championship as the tournament’s host. In the fourth and final season with the 67’s, he included on the OHL First All-Star team, and was named an award of OHL Humanitarian of the Year for his efforts to help the homeless and also won the Leo Lalonde’s Memorial Trophy the best player in the OHL over age with another consecutive 84-point season.

In the absence of an National Hockey League (NHL) club, Tessier earned an invite to the Montreal Canadiens training camp in 2000. He played his first professional campaign in East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with the Louisiana IceGators, recording 35 points over 60 games. The following year Tessier was awarded another NHL invitation to training camp as a member of Ottawa Senators. Ottawa Senators. Tessier played in his 2001-02 campaign, however, playing in the Holland Super League with the Amstel Tijgers where he finished second in scoring league-wide with 43 points over 33 games and was also first in scoring playoffs.
