She is also a board director for Inner East Community Health, and the chair of Peter MacCallum’s Cancer Centre.
The Abortion Law Reform Act was introduced by Morand in 2008. The bill was passed and made abortion legal in Victoria for up to 24 weeks. It also allows for birth up to the moment of birth, if two doctors approve. Right to Life organizations targeted her during and after the campaign for the 2010 Victorian elections because of her pro-choice advocacy. She lost her seat to Michael Gidley, the Liberal candidate at that election.
Morand lives in Melbourne with her husband, John Merritt, and two children. Morand was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011.
Morand served as the Chief Executive Officer of Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) between 2011 and 2014. Prior to joining BCNA, Morand was Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development and Minister for Women’s Affairs in the Brumby Ministry, and held the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Mount Waverley. Before being elected to Parliament, she was a researcher at Cancer Council Victoria and ministerial adviser. Prior to entering politics she was a nurse and transplant coordinator.
John Brumby, newly elected Premier, announced a cabinet reshuffle. Morand was promoted to the newly created portfolio for Children and Early Childhood Development on 2 August 2007. She was also named Minister for Women’s Affairs.
