Hayman joined French club Toulon on 22 March 2010. Hayman joins a group of well-known players who signed for Toulon along with Jonny Wilkinson and Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe. Because of the New Zealand Rugby Union policy that only selects players who have previously played in New Zealand’s domestic competition, he decided to stay in Europe and was therefore ineligible to play in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
A club source said of the signing “every top club in Europe has been chasing him, but he’s chosen to come to Newcastle and we’re delighted he has made that decision”. Hayman is strong enough to box squat 250 kg (550 lb).
He was selected for the Barbarians squad that played Tonga 26 November 2010. He was 16-15 behind Clermont Auvergne when he won the 2013 Heineken Cup Final.

Hayman was reportedly the highest-paid rugby union player after signing a contract with Newcastle Falcons worth $NZ 1 million (PS350,000). This contract was in effect for a year, until 2010. Northern Rock, the Newcastle Falcons’ sponsor, partially funded this contract. Hayman made his Falcons debut on December 1, 2007 as a replacement for the London Wasps’ EDF Energy Cup match.
