Cain was born on 5 February 1972, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Mary Cain and Larry Schmidt. Cain spent her childhood in a hippie commune just located outside the city of Iowa City. Her father was a fugitive from the Vietnam draft, and her parents resided “underground” for several years. When she was in 1978, they relocated together with her mom in Bellingham, Washington, where she went to Lowell Elementary School, Fairhaven Middle School and Sehome High School. She attended school living in Bellingham with her mom and the summer months at Florida together with her dad, stepmother and stepbrother.

After being creative director for an agency for public relations in Portland for a number of many years Cain was able to write humor-based books on her own in her spare time. These include The Hippie Handbook: How to tie-dye a T-shirt, Flash a Peace Sign and Other Skills for a Carefree life (Chronicle Books 2004) Confessions of the Teen Sleuth (Bloomsbury 2005) And Do you think this Cape make me look fat? Pop-Psychology For Superheroes (Chronicle Books 2006) The latter, Cain wrote with her husband. Cain also wrote an every week article for the alternative paper, The Portland Mercury and started writing for Portland’s leading newspaper, The Oregonian in 2003. After leaving marketing to concentrate exclusively on the writing. Her last column for The Oregonian was posted on December 28th the 28th of December, 2008.

She is the writer of comic book series Man-Eaters for Image Comics with artists Kate Niemczyk and Lia Miternique, which became available in shops in September 2018.

Her first novel, a thriller, was Heartsick in 2004 when she was she was pregnant and with her child. The novel was released in September of 2007 and became an instant New York Times bestseller. Sweetheart as well as Evil at Heart, the third and second books in the series, both are New York Times bestsellers.
