Camille Anne Francoise Abily, born 5 December 1984, is a French retired football player. She is best known for her role as a star midfielder in France for the French women’s national soccer team and the Lyon club in Division 1 Feminine. She is a primarily attacking midfielder. Abily has been a two-time National Union of Professional Footballers Female Player of Year winner. She became the first woman to be awarded the award in consecutive seasons in 2007 after receiving her second consecutive honour. After moving to the Women’s Professional Soccer league (WPS), Abily was awarded Player of the Month as well as All-Star.
Abily won the league four times with her club. She won back-to-back titles in Lyon and Montpellier. She was named Female Player of Year in 2006 and 2007. She won the WPS Championship in 2010 with the FC Gold Pride.
At the opening match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a 1–0 win over England in Moncton, Abily controversially escaped punishment when she inflicted a black eye on Laura Bassett by elbowing the English player in the face.
Abily retired from international football in 2017, citing a desire to spend more time with her daughter.
Abily was also a French international and earned 183 caps. Before she joined the senior team, Abily represented the under-18 team at UEFA Women’s Under-18 Championship 2001. Abily made her international senior debut in September 2001 in a friendly against the Netherlands. Abily started her football career in 1992 with Jeanne d’Arc Bruz. She joined FC Bruz in 1994. After a year at another club, Abily joined FC Bruz in 1994. She spent the next year playing in the first division for Stade Briochin & La Roche-sur-Yon. She was invited to the Clairefontaine academy’s women’s section in 2002. Abily signed with Montpellier after her stint at Clairefontaine. She won two league titles and the Challenge de France, the women’s domestic cup. Abily moved to Lyon after three seasons at Montpellier. She won many titles similar to her time at Montpellier. This included three consecutive league titles between 2006 and 2009. After her American playing rights were selected by the Los Angeles Sol during the 2008 WPS International Draft, Abily joined Women’s Professional Soccer in the United States. Abily played on loan for Paris Saint-Germain in France after helping the Sol win their league. She returned to the United States in 2010 to play for FC Gold Pride. This was her second consecutive league title. Abily, who announced her intention to return to Lyon in 2010-11, was a member of the winning team for the 2010-11 UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Abily made her international debut with Les Bleues in a match against The Netherlands on 26 September 2001.
In March 2009, she joined the new United States-based women’s soccer league, Women’s Professional Soccer, after her American playing rights were assigned to the Los Angeles Sol. She made her debut in the league’s inaugural match against the Washington Freedom, which included her French compatriot Sonia Bompastor, and scored the second goal in the Sol’s 2–0 victory. On 7 January 2010 Abily was traded to FC Gold Pride. She played in 17 games, scoring one goal and having six assists. On 27 September, Abily’s contract with the Gold Pride was mutually terminated as she decided to return to Olympique Lyon and focus on the upcoming 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
