Ferenc Varga, his elementary school art teacher, introduced him to the world of photography. He became a passionate photographer for school television and took up motion picture. He was accepted into the No. 6 Vocational School, Prater Street, Budapest. He was also a successful student filmmaker in Mondavio, Valencia and Budapest. Although he tried several times to be accepted into the College of Industrial Arts’ photography major, he was rejected due to his inept drawing skills. In 2006, a second unsuccessful application to the University of Film Arts’ cameraman specialty was also made. He was a photo reporter at the weekly “168 Hours” from 1993 to 2005. He was a teacher at Camera Anima Open Academy from 2002 to
- Between 2008 and 2009, he was also the photo editor and columnist for news portal zoom.hu. He is a freelance photographer, and has given lectures at many photography schools.
He has been awarded the Pecsijozsef Photography Scholarship multiple times between 1998 and 2008. In 2002, he won Hungart Scholarship. In 2003, he was presented with the Balogh Rudolf Award. He spent two months in Paris as part of the Andre Kertesz scholarship. Four times he has been awarded the National Cultural Fund’s creative scholarship. In 2005, his first slideshow, Ocean of Sighs – Cuba, was completed. It was the first slideshow in the history of photography to be granted national film distribution. It was screened in cinemas with great success, just before Wim Wenders’ Don’t Come Knocking. He was awarded the National Association of Hungarian Artists’ creative scholarship in 2006. He was named Foto-Video Magazine’s Photographer of The Year in 2010 for his first place finish in the EISA Maestro Photo Competition. He won both a professional award and an audience award in the 2011 international photo book tender by Blurb, the world leader in on-demand book publishing (Photography Book Now 2011,). As part of the Budapest Gallery international residency program, he was awarded a month-long scholarship to Lisbon.
The year 2012 brought a turning point in his professional life, since then he believes more strongly in the power of movie screenings than in traditional photography exhibitions. In the fall of 2012 he presented the first Hungarian feature-length photo-movie (slideshow) in the distribution of Budapest Film entitled Landslides – Discovering the void, which was screened with great success across the theatres of the Art movie network in Budapest. Encouraged by the excellent reception, he held two completely sold out retrospective independent slideshow evenings entitled Vancso! Live, then in November he made the presentation of his two new photo albums memorable, again by using movie screenings. In April 2014 he organized an all-day series of screenings called “Photovancso-Marathon”; in the same year he made his debut at the Month of Photography 2014 festival with 5 independent slideshow evenings. His name is linked with the first Hungarian 4K Ultra HD slideshow movie screening.
I’d prefer if the value of a print wasn’t determined by the number of copies made but by the number of people who like it, the number of people it evokes feelings from. Similarly to a musician who doesn’t limit the copies of his work that he wants to share with the world. He doesn’t declare that his CD only exists in 10, 50 or 200 copies thus making it very valuable. I’d like to make my photographs as widely available, purchasable as possible. I never really understood why the majority of artists still insist on the existence of their works in the fewest copies and on the highest prices in case of an art technique so easily reproducible as photography. This is even more shocking in today’s digital world! It’s important to me that interested parties with an average income should be able to buy my photographs, not only wealthy collectors who consider them rather as an investment than a subject of enthusiasm.
Vancso is involved in several professional organizations. He was a member of Studio of Young Photographers Hungary (FFS) from 1996 to 2006; in Young Photographers United since 2004 (YPU); in 2002, he was a member of the Association of Hungarian Photographers. Here he served as a board member for two years. Since 2005, he has been enrolled in the National Association of Hungarian Artists.
