Yuko Kavaguti is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on November 20, 1981 in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Kavaguti/Smirnov participated in the first Olympic Games in Vancouver Canada. After the short program, they finished 3rd with a season’s highest score of 74.16. This was 2.5 points behind Shen/Zhao, who were 1st. Their coach told them not to attempt the quad throw during warm-up. Kavaguti fell out of the triple Salchow throw at the beginning. Smirnov jumped out of the double Axel but there was not enough speed to complete the second Axel. Kavaguti was dislocated by the last throw. They continued skating but did not reach full level on many elements. They were 1st overall, but there were still 3 pairs to skate. They were 4th overall. They were the Russian pair skaters with the highest placements.
Kawaguchi reconnected with Moskvina in 2003 and moved back to Saint Petersburg, Russia, where she also enrolled at a university. After she began skating with Josh Martin, an American skater, Kawaguchi was struck by a car while he rollerbladed to practice. He suffered cuts and a broken elbow and decided to return home to the U.S. Kawaguchi subsequently skated with Devin Patrick, another American skater. He taught me quad throw (salchow). Kawaguchi said that he did very well with the throws but not all of the elements. They placed 15th at the U.S. Championships and Japanese Championships respectively, but decided to separate their lives. He wanted to live in America, but I was not ready to leave Tamara Nikolaevna Moskvina. I couldn’t leave my coach and give up my studies to go to America. Although she was concerned about finding a partner, she was determined to finish her degree.
Their first Grand Prix competition was the Cup of Russia where they won the bronze medal. They also competed at the Coupe de Nice in France and won gold. Kavaguti dislocated her shoulder after a fall on a quad throw in 2006 and occasionally suffered recurring problems for several years after. During practice on 25 December 2006, Kavaguti broke her ankle, forcing the pair to withdraw from the 2007 Russian Championship and the 2007 European Championship. They competed at the 2007 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. This was their first worlds as a pair. They came in 4th after the short program, and placed 10th in the long program and 9th overall.
Kavaguti teamed up with Alexander Smirnov to compete for Russia in May 2006. She accepted to skate for another country due to the difficulty in finding a good partner. Smirnov said, “We often trained at the same rink and I could see how hard she works. I thought I was a hard worker but after watching her I was really amazed by her work level.” They train at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia. They initially worked with Nikolai Velikov but Kavaguti had been training with Tamara Moskvina since 1998 and preferred to stay with her. They began training with Moskvina in August 2006.
Kavaguti and Alexander Markuntsov teamed up in March 1999 to compete for Japan. They trained mostly in Hackensack, with Igor Moskvina, Tatiana Druchinina and Moskvina their coaches, and Moskvina, Igor Moskvina, and Moskvina their choreographers. When they won silver at the World Junior Championships 2001, the Japanese pair became the first to win an ISU championship medal. In 2003, Kavaguti split from Markuntsov. Kavaguti stated, “We had a great working relationship, but it was very difficult to obtain Japanese citizenship for Alexander, so we decided to end the relationship.”

Yuko Kavaguti, also known as Kawaguchi, Japanese Kawaguchi Yuko (Chuan Kou You Zi) and Russian Iuko Kavaguti, was born 20 November 1981. She is a pair skater, who has represented Russia and Japan in international competition. She began skating with Alexander Smirnov in 2006 for Russia. They are the European champions (2010), 2015, and two-time World bronze medalists (2010), 2009, and 2010 respectively. They were the first couple to accomplish quadruple jumps in one program, and also the first to land a quadruple throwing loop in 2015.
Kavaguti started skating when she was five years old because her mother loved ice dancing. Kavaguti started out as a singles competitor for Japan. She then switched to pairs when she was inspired by Elena Berezhnaya, a Russian pair skater, at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. Kavaguti wrote to Tamara Moskvina, her coach. She was impressed by Kavaguti’s persistence and eventually agreed to train her. Kavaguti moved from Hackensack to Hackensack in New Jersey, where Moskvina was at the time coaching.
In addition to her native Japanese, Kavaguti is also fluent in Russian and English. From 2003, she studied and majored in international relations at St. Petersburg State University, completing her degree in June 2007. Kavaguti has expressed interest in a career in international diplomacy following her skating career. In December 2008, she acquired Russian citizenship to qualify for a spot on that nation’s Olympic team. Japan does not allow dual nationality, so she was obliged to give up her Japanese citizenship and may reapply to get it back only after ten years. When her family name was transliterated from Japanese to Russian and then into Latin characters, “Kawaguchi” became “Kavaguti”.
