Noda is married to Hitomi, his wife since 1992. They have two children. He is a black belt in Judo. Ramen and sake are his favorite foods and drinks. He co- authored the book Enemy of the DPJ : Government Change Has a Great Cause.

In October 2005, Noda criticized Prime Minister Jun’ichirō Koizumi for his position on Japanese class A war criminals as “war criminals”. However, Noda supported Koizumi’s visit to Yasukuni Shrine.

Noda received praise for passing the consumption tax hike despite intense opposition, but was also criticized for bringing the DPJ closer in substance to its rival LDP, rather than keeping the campaign promises by which it defeated the LDP in 2009. One commentator called him “the best prime minister the LDP never had.”

Noda graduated in 1975 from Chiba Prefectural Funabashi Senior High school. With the B.A., he graduated from Waseda University. He received a B.A. in Political Science from Waseda University in 1980, and was later admitted to the prestigious Matsushita Institute. To prepare future leaders in Japan, this institution was established by Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic. Noda was a Matsushita Institute student and read household gas meters in Chiba Prefecture as part of his preparation to run for office. At the age of 29, he was elected first to the assembly in Chiba Prefecture.

Noda, the son a paratrooper with the Japan Self-Defense Forces, was born in Funabashi in Chiba, 20 May 1957. Noda does not have any family connections to Nagatacho, unlike many other prominent Japanese politicians. His parents couldn’t afford a wedding reception.

After Naoto Kan’s resignation in August 2011, Noda stood as a candidate in the party election to replace him. He won a runoff vote against Banri Kaieda in the leadership election, making him the presumptive prime minister. He inherited the challenge of rebuilding from the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
