Tyrone Conn was born in 1967, under the name Ernest Bruce Hayes, to an Ontario 15-year-old mother as well as an uncle who was from Newfoundland and Labrador. After being born, the mother resigned him to the care of his father which in turn, abandoned them to his grandparents. Conn was discovered in the Toronto apartment within two weeks of his escape. He was surrounded by police and decided to commit suicide rather than being captured. There are theories that suggest Conn accidentally fired the gun he stole from his hand during the standoff as he was talking on the phone with Theresa Burke, a CBC producer. Burke as well as reporter Linden MacIntyre, both associated with the CBC’s television show The Fifth Estate, later published the book Who killed Ty Conn (Viking Press Canada, 2000; reprinted in 2011 by Creative Book Publishing, St. John’s). MacIntyre was acquainted with Conn in 1994 in the process of researching an investigative report about the consequences on children who are abused. The time was 1994 and Conn served a long 47 years sentence, primarily on charges of bank robbery. The lengthy sentence was despite the absence of violence on his criminal history.
