In May 28, 2008, Flavell signed to play for The Japanese side Mitsubishi Sagamihara DynaBoars on a two-year contractthat began at the end in the Super 14 season.
He was appointed Captain for the Blues for the 2007 Super 14 season and was the most outstanding forward in that season. Super 14, subsequently regaining his All Black Jersey. He was a part of the initial five matches during the season 2007. He was then left out in the All Black 2007 Rugby World Cup squadand substituted with Sione Lauaki. Flavell Regained the All Black place in 2006 by playing two matches against Ireland before suffering an injury throughout the season.
As of the month of October, Flavell was back in New Zealand after a brief stint playing for Japanese team Toyota Verblitz. In his final game for Toyota Verblitz in the 43rd Japan Championships on 12 February 2006, he played in the team that was defeated by the best student team, Waseda University. It marked the first occasion an Top League team had lost to an university team. He chose to move into Auckland Rugby Union. Auckland Rugby Union instead of joining his previous Union North Harbour (based in the northern portion of the Auckland Region). He was signed for Auckland during two consecutive seasons.
