Tina Monzon-Palma is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on March 29, 1951 in Malate, Philippines. Tina Monzon- Palma (born Maria Cristina Mapa Monzon on the 29th of March 1951, in Manila) is an Filipina anchorwoman and broadcast journalist. Her most well-known role is for her role as a late-night anchorwoman on various Philippine news shows on various networks. She was GMA Network’s first female news anchor and also established the department of Public Affairs during her tenure during her tenure as GMA News executive. She later moved to ABC-5 (eventually in the form of TV5 and later TV5, 5) to oversee the operations. After she quit the company after five years, she was the leader of ABS-CBN’s campaign for public service against child abuse through its Bantay Bata program for social assistance. In the end, she was appointed as anchor of ABS-CBN’s late-night news show The World Tonight where she was replaced by Loren Legarda.
After a one-month break after which she moved to the newly-opened ABC-5 (later changed to TV5 which is which is now 5) and was promoted to the Chief Operating Officer. As the executive of the station she was not engaged in the newsroom’s daily routine, but she did present The Big News with Eric Eloriaga and Kathy Tanco Ong, her anchors. She remained for five years at ABC-5 before taking her time from the spotlight at the end of May. In October of the following year she was chosen to be the program director by Gina Lopez of ABS- CBN to be the program director for Bantay Bata 163, the public service initiative that is run by ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (later become named ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation) to fight child abuse.
Her work as broadcast journalist garnered a number of awards from different bodies. In 2002, she received the Ka Doroy Broadcaster of the Year award that was given by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, a broadcast media organization, for her work as radio broadcaster at DZMM. In 2008, she was granted a Lifetime Achievement Award that was bestowed by Gawad Tanglaw, an award-giving body from the academe.
Saint Scholastica’s Alumnae Foundation, Inc. recognized Monzon Palma as one of the 100 Outstanding Scholasticians while Saint Scholastica’s College gave the Hildegard Award in 2010. In 2017, the Mass Communications College of the University of the Philippines has conferred her with the Gawad Plaridel for her professional integrity in her 40 years in the broadcast media.
She quit GMA Network in 1992 after an error she committed during an evening news program. She falsely reported on the live broadcast the fact that Maureen Hultman, a shooting victim, was dead, but in reality, the victim was still in a coma. After the incident, she didn’t go to work, and eventually she resigned and admitted to the incorrect report. She also expressed her regrets at her family members the Hultmans for the mistake she made.

While she was a freshman during her time at Saint Scholastica’s College, Monzon-Palma was already anchoring work on behalf of The Manila Times’ radio station DZMT which hosts the radio show Times Tower Revue. Later, she was transferred to another radio station DZHP which she joined with other well- known broadcast journalists, including Bong Lapira, and Jose Mari Velez. Then, in the course of Martial Law in the Philippines which was decreed through Ferdinand Marcos in the early 1970s, she was an anchor for the weather and host of children’s television shows at the state-run television station. It was later named National Media Production Center.
The year was 1976 when she moved in 1976 to GMA Network to become its first female newscaster at the age of 25. She began her career anchoring News at Seven, then The 11:30 Report and later GMA Headline News. She was also among the anchors of the longest running public service show Kapwa Ko Mahal Ko, which she ended within a year. Monzon-Palma is among the celebrities who worked for Channel 4 (then named as Maharlika Broadcasting System), the Philippine government-owned television station which was later taken over by the forces that were associated with the People Power revolt. Following the People Power Revolution, then the president Corazon Aquino assigned Monzon- Palma and Jose Mari Velez to manage Channel 4, which was changed in the name of People’s Television Network (PTV-4). After a couple of months she was back at GMA and was a anchor for the late-night news alongside Velez. She was later promoted to the position of chief of staff for GMA News and Public Affairs and established the Public Affairs department.
When then The World Tonight news anchor Loren Legarda decided to run for a seat in the Philippine Senate, Monzon-Palma was asked by ABS-CBN to take Legarda’s place. She agreed while still doing her work at Bantay Bata. In 1999, when most programs in English steadily came to an end on free television, The World Tonight was moved to ABS-CBN News Channel and Monzon- Palma continued to be its news presenter together with co-anchor Angelo Castro Jr. Palma also the former host of Talkback, a current affairs television program branded as interactive. She also do radio broadcast at ABS-CBN’s AM radio station, DZMM, through her radio program Paksa, which discusses subjects such as women, labor rights, welfare of children, and the “militant poor”. She also took over Sagip Kapamilya as program director after handling Bantay Bata. She later gave up her duties in Sagip Kapamilya but still continued her work as broadcast journalist in ABS-CBN.
