He is a member of the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL) as well as being contracted with the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected as the 4th round’s 117th player in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

On June 28, 2019 Leier decided to extend his time with the Americans and signed the year-long AHL contract. The 2019-20 season was the year that Leier returned from injury , scoring seven goals in 17 games for the Americans and then signed an one-year two-way NHL contract that will run through the remainder of the season, with parent affiliate the Buffalo Sabres on February 17 and 18, 2020.

In the 2016-17 season Leier had his very first NHL goal for the Flyers on the 17th of December 2016, against the Dallas Stars. The Flyers later re-signed him back to the Phantoms and was a part of Lehigh Valley in the 2017 AHL All- Star Game where he was named the MVP of the game. In July of 2017, he signed a one-year two-way contract worth $807,000 renewal to the Flyers. On July 15, 2018 after Leier requested arbitration, he agreed to an one-year contract with the Flyers valued at $720,000.

Leier started his professional junior career playing in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winterhawks who drafted him 24th overall in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. While playing for the Winterhawks, Leier was drafted as 117th overall from the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Leier signed an entry-level three-year contract to the Flyers on September 9 2013. Leier played the NHL debut in the game against Carolina Hurricanes on November 14 in 2015.
