Beirne was given his first international call-up to senior level in May 2018and was picked as part of the Ireland squad for a tour of Australia in June. He was able to make his first senior Ireland debut on June 16th 2018 when he was called up in place of Peter O’Mahony during his second match against Australia and also being called from on the bench in Ireland in their third test victory of 20-16 which was the final test of the historic series win 2-1 for Ireland. Beirne made his debut with Ireland in the match against Italy on November 3, 2018 during their autumn international at Soldier Field, Chicago, scoring two tries in the victory of his team 54-7 as well as starting in the 57-14 victory against in the United States three weeks later.
In October 2017, Munster announced the signing of Beirne on a two-year contract, which began at the start of the 2018–19 season. Beirne was named the Guinness Players’ Player of the Season when the 2017–18 Pro14 awards were announced in August 2018. He made his Munster debut on 7 September 2018, coming on as a replacement for Dave O’Callaghan in the provinces 2018–19 Pro14 fixture against Glasgow Warriors. Beirne made his first start for Munster on 14 September 2018, doing so in their 49–13 win against Ospreys in Irish Independent Park.
He was selected in the 31-man Ireland squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, having featured in the warm-up matches against Italy, England and Wales.
It was announced on the 28th of June, 2016 Beirne was moving to Scarlets. Beirne was able to make his Scarlets debut as a bench player in the first fixture of the campaign, losing against Munster. Beirne then played a huge part in the Scarlets their successful 2016-17 season where they defeated Munster by a score of 46-22 at the Pro12 Grand Final to win their first silverware since 2003-04 season.
