Although he only made the debut of a record club 7-1 defeat at home by Brighton & Hove Albion, Hicks made a huge connection with Chester supporters when the club battled hard but failed to avoid the possibility of relegation. Hicks popularity with the club’s supporters was so high that he was third in the award for the best player of the season having played just thirteen games with the team. But, he decided to stay within Division Three and then joined Mansfield Town. Hicks was to experience an injury-prone time during his time at Field Mill and he announced his retirement from professional football in February 2002. Then he joined non-league team Hucknall Town to complete his playing career.
After retiring from football the player has now shifted to the world of designer clothing for men. He launched the first Mainline Menswear store in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, in 2002.

Hicks began his career at the club he grew up with, Peterborough United, where he made his professional debut at the end of August in 1984. However , he was not able to play in any league games with the Posh and then he was sent on loan to the non-league Wisbech Town. After his return, he was transferred to Colchester United in March 1988 and remained until they were dropped from The Football League in 1990.
Hicks later played for Scunthorpe United, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End and Scarborough before returning to the south after joining Leyton Orient in August 1997. After 78 league games with Orient, Hicks joined The Football League’s bottom team Chester City in February 2000.
