Dean played his first game for Staffordshire in the match against Lincolnshire during the 1982 Minor Counties Championship. Dean played Minor county cricket in Staffordshire from 1982 until 2003. This comprised sixteen1 Minor Counties Championship appearances and 47 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. In fact, it was Staffordshire that Dean made his debut in List A cricket for, against Glamorgan in the 1986 NatWest Trophy. In the following 17 years Dean went on to make another 16 limited-overs appearances with Staffordshire and scored 302 runs , at an average 14.38.
