He was born in Yong Peng in Johor, Malaysia on October 1, 1961. He received his education at Sekolah Menengah Inggeris in his hometown and at Tunku Abdul Rahman College Kuala Lumpur. After a brief period of teaching at Rengit’s Chung Hwa High School in Johor, he went on to study law at Queen Mary College. In July 1988, he became a barrister of London’s Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn. He was also admitted to practice as an advocate in Singapore and Malaysia in 1989. He is also a graduate of the National University of Singapore’s Master of Laws program.
Roger acted pro bono for Al-Yatama Bhd (free of charge), which manages nine Johor Muslim orphanages. Roger successfully repossessed 2,700 acres (11km) of the land of Al-Yatama Bhd’s Johor orphanages. Al-Yatama Bhd also received a verdict sum of RM64million for Al-Yatama Bhd.
In 1988, he was one of the young lawyers selected to meet with Singapore Chief Justice, Wee Chong Jin to give their views on the establishment of Singapore Academy of Law. Roger was instrumental in founding the Waste Management Association of Malaysia in 2005, having drafted its constitution and assumed office as its first Honorary Secretary. In 2008, the International Bar Association appointed him as part of an international team to evaluate the state of judiciary and the rule of law in Fiji. On 10 July 2019, he was appointed to the task force set up by the Malaysian government investigating the disappearances of Pastor Raymond Koh and activist Amri Che Mat.
His father Sue Yong, went on a walk with his family on 23 May 2000 and then disappeared. Many Malaysians were touched by the family’s efforts to locate their father.
