Born within Kearny, McLean graduated from Kearny High School where the class of 1978 was his first Team Senior High School All American soccer player. He was later chosen as a member of make the Wall Soccer Club team of the 1970s. He was a student at Philadelphia Textile, playing on the team for men from 1979 until 1983. He earned an honorable Mention, as well as 1982 and 1983 First Team All American. He’s currently sixth on the all-time assists list, and eighth on the all-time goals list.
The year 1989 was the time that McLean quit professional football and joined the sport apparel industry in the company of Umbro USA. In 1997, McLean moved to Adidas as director of product Marketing before being transferred into Oswego Group in 2000. Oswego Group in 2000 and returned to Umbro in 2003.
As of 1984, McLean participated in the Charlotte Gold of the United Soccer League. On the 27th of September, 1984, he joined the Wichita Wings of the Major Indoor Soccer League. A number of injuries and illnesses restricted his participation to just one game in the first season of his debut after which he was moved to defense. He was was transferred onto The New York Express which collapsed in the course of the season.
