Anwesh Sahoo is one of the most popular and richest Beauty Pageant Contestant who was born on July 4, 1995 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Anwesh was born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on 4 July 1995. He was married to Jagannath Sahoo, an Engineer employed by NTPC and Kanak Sahoo who is a homemaker. Anwesh was raised in a small township in Kaniha situated in Odisha. When he was 13 he and his parents relocated into Noida, Uttar Pradesh. He attended school through the Vishwa Bharati school in Noida and has spoken of numerous instances of bullying in his school years in his blog posts and interviews.
He was the spokesperson for the dance4pride event held by Delhi-based nonprofit Those in Need in association with Scruff in April 2017. He was participated as a spokesperson on the social media marketing campaign for the Delhi-based brand Poem bags. Anwesh is a contributing writer to DNA, India with his article titled “The Problem with Stereotypes” that was published on May 23rd, 2017. He wrote about his story of coming out in the article, writing “The problem with stereotypes isn’t that they’re wrong, it’s that they are incomplete.” In July of 2017, Sahoo featured in an advertisement film for Kraftly which is an Indian online marketplace that specializes in the purchase and sale of distinctive brands and products. Anwesh also appeared on National Geographic Channel’s Explorer Season 10, Episode 12 (uncredited) which was released on 22 May , 2017. On the 6th of October, 2018, Anwesh was awarded the Troy Perry Award for compassionate activism at Los Angeles, California, which makes him one of the very first Indian to be awarded of this award. Anwesh has been featured on the Times of India’s lists of the 11 most inspirational LGBTIQA+ Indians alongside Vikram Seth, and Keshav Suri. He also in 2020, he was featured on the cover of Vogue India in the list of five queer Indian influencers to follow on Instagram.
In an interview with Gaylaxy Magazine, he said how he had a very good childhood until he started middle school and the bullying intensified. He said his only escape was his books and the dream of acing his 12th boards. He went on to score 95% in his Higher Secondary Exams. He also secured an All India Rank of 15 in the National Institute of Fashion Technology’s exam in 2018, and is a student of M.Des at NIFT, New Delhi.
Post-winning Mr. Gay World India, he was participant in The 50 Shades of Gay campaign shot by Shubham Mehrotra. The campaign was then included in the Gay Star News that year. He was the first ex- contributor to Pink Pages to feature on the cover in the June issue in 2016. Anwesh was later recognized as a mainstream celebrity through a viral video which he produced with Gaysi known as the Silly Queries Straight People ask Gay Men that went viral on the Internet and was then presented on numerous Indian as well as International websites, including BuzzFeed India, Cosmopolitan India, Vagabomb and Logo TV’s NEWNOWNEXT. Another video of Anwesh belly-dancing to a well-known Bollywood song ‘My Name Is Lakhan’ became a viral hit later in the year, in December. Anwesh Kumar Sahoo (born 4 July , 1995) is an Indian artist blogger, writer model, actor, and TEDx speaker. He was named Mr. Gay World India 2016, being India’s youngest recipient of this title when he was just twenty years old. He was a representative of India in the Mr. Gay World 2016 pageant held in Malta, Europe and made it to the Top 12. He was awarded the Troy Perry Award for compassionate activism, which makes his the very first Indian to receive the honor. He is a graduate of Electronics and Communication Engineering from IIIT Delhi, and is currently a Master’s degree participant in NIFT, New Delhi.
Anwesh has been a speaker at three TEDx conferences: TEDxMAIS 2016 (Mallya Aditi International School, Bangalore), TEDxXIMB 2017 (Xavier’s Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar), and TEDxCVS (College of Vocational Studies, Delhi University) . The first event was a TEDx talk. Anwesh addressed the need to get out from his Gender Binary. Through his speech He challenged a culture where gender and sex are frequently used interchangeably, when in reality , there is an obvious distinction of the two. He envisions a world in which your identity isn’t restricted to the binary gender of male either female or male, instead it instead can be expressed as a variety of possibilities. The third TEDx presentation, “Tapping into your Alice,” was about growing up in a world which didn’t recognize the needs of people who didn’t fit into gender stereotypes as well as the way that adulthood deprives the belief we have in the power of magic. Anwesh’s final talk was entitled, “Growing up gay in India, and learning to be confident” In it, the speaker discussed the fact that “Effeminacy isn’t just euphemisms for indignity. Being homosexual, femme, brown and me is powerful and sexy! “.
He also works as a writer for Swaddle, a parenting website where he writes on sexuality and gender related issues for parents. Some of his notable works on the site include, “What do you do if you think your child is Gay?”, and “Gender and Sexuality Terms: A Sensitive Glossary for Parents”. Anwesh has also written of his experience of being bullied online post winning the crown of Mr. Gay India, where he was criticized for not being ‘pretty enough’ and being ‘too dark’ to represent India on his blog The Effeminare, which was later published on Gaylaxy Magazine and covered by Pinksixty News. He also organized Delhi University’s first pride walk in association with IIT Delhi’s Annual fest Rendezvous to create awareness and promote acceptance for the LGBTIQ community. Anwesh has also been photographed by British photographer Olivia Arthur for a photo-series exploring sexuality in Mumbai, India which were later exhibited at the FOCUS Photography Festival, 2017 at Elysium Mansion, Colaba. Anwesh was named as one of the emerging LGBT Role Models of 2016 by Indian Women Blog, alongside transgender rights activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, and Business Analyst Himanshu Singh.
