With the prospect of a Grand Slam on the cards, Hanley was one of two Sale players who made their international debut in the final game of their 1999 Five Nations campaign along with Barrie-Jon Mather. While Hanley scored a goal however, he was also dismissed at the hands of Craig Quinnell and suffered a broken arm when Wales beat England 32-31. This was the last game Hanley was to play in the top England team. The reason for this was never explained to him as to why Hanley was not picked for the next time, despite the possibility that his defence needed to be better. He enrolled with the rugby league team St. Helens to improve his defensive skills. Reminiscing about the reasons it was difficult for him to get in to the England team following the year 1999 Hanley admitted that “They had a settled side under Clive [Woodward] and once you were in, it was hard to get out as the team was winning all the time”.
There was a close relationship among Hanley along with his fellow Sale player Mark Cueto to see who was the club’s top try-scorer. Hanley was able to recover from his injury to his leg and resumed playing first-team rugby on the 17th of August, 2005. Sale defeated Pau 27-3, winning their first silverware trophy since 2002. Hanley recorded 15 attempts during the entire season and nine of them were during the Premiership. Steven Melvyn Hanley (born 11 June 1979) is a former union footballer who was a wing player for the Sale Sharks, signing with the club in 1998. As of 1999, Hanley was the sole player to play a Test match for England. He was Sale’s “Player of the Year” in 2004. After having a back injury in December 2007 Hanley quit in July 2008 following a warning from medical professionals that he was not going to recover enough to take on professional rugby. He scored 104 goals in 191 games, with 75 of them in the Premiership.
The club relocated to Heywood Road in Sale to Edgeley Park in Stockport in 2003. A season of mixed results saw Sale triumph at Welford Road for the first time. Later, they became the first team to score six tries during an identical match in the same venue and advance into the semi-finals game of the Powergen Cup where they were defeated by 37-33 Newcastle Falcons; and fail to make it into the Heineken Cup. Hanley was named as the Club’s “Player of the Season”. Philippe Saint André joined Sale as the club’s manager in the month of March. In 2005, when discussing Saint-Andre’s influence in Sale, Hanley noted that “He has brought a lot of different ideas to the club, people have stood up and taken notice of him. He has a special interest in his wingers and has lots of good ideas and little technical things only a player who has played the class of rugby he has would know.”
During a Challenge Cup match against Bayonne in December 2007, Hanley suffered a back injury. Unable to recover, in July 2008 he announced his retirement from rugby. In his ten-year career with Sale, he played 191 matches, scoring 104 tries. According to Hanley, “the medical advice is that I will not be able to play Premiership rugby again”. He finished his career with 75 Premiership tries, a record at the time surpassed by his great rival at Sale Sharks, Mark Cueto in 2013. The following season, 2008/09, the club held a testimonial for Hanley. He commented that “For me, it’s been so nice to get back in touch with everybody. You play with these guys for so long and when you are in a rugby environment they are some of your best mates. But when they drift away you tend to lose contact with people so it has been brilliant to catch up with so many old friends.”
