Levin (born on December 3 1981) is an American politician and New York City Council member representing the 33rd District of the New York City Council. He is a Democrat.

Levin introduced an ordinance to lower the amount of fines imposed on street food vendors due to procedural violations. The bill was approved by the City Council on February 27 2013, and lowered the burden of regulation for street food vendors.

On June 10, 2015, he voted for a bill, which subsequently passed the City Council, to create a new tier of benefits for firefighters and police officers hired after 2009 who are permanently disabled in the line of duty.

In September of 2010 He was named among City Hall’s “40 under 40” for being a young, influential participant in New York City politics. He is currently living with his family in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with his wife and two children.

Levin was raised within Plainfield, New Jersey. He is related to the former U.S. Senator Carl Levin of Michigan, and former Congressman Sander Levin of Michigan’s 9th congressional District, Levin completed his studies at Brown University with a degree in Classics and Comparative Literature. He then relocated from Michigan to Brooklyn to begin his professional career working for the Lead Safe House Program at the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council. The program helped families with children suffering from lead poisoning from their toxic homes. In 2006, he began on to serve the New York State Assembly as the chief of staff to Assemblyman Vito Lopez.

Levin has been elected to succeed David Yassky, who vacated the post to run for New York City Comptroller, in a highly competitive seven-way race that was backed by Assemblyman Vito Lopez. Lopez helped him get support from United Federation of Teachers (UFT), DC 37, the Working Families Party, the NY League of Conservation Voters and senator Charles Schumer, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. In addition, Lopez obtained for his former employer the backing of the Zaloni group from the Jewish Satmar community in Williamsburg. This Hasidic group helped Levin with the necessary margin for victory in 2009.

In 2013, Levin introduced participatory budgeting, a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget, to his district. At that time, Levin was one of eight members of the City Council to offer participatory budgeting to his constituents.
