The adversary, Italian Vincenzo Gigliotti was stopped in the 10th round , meaning that Pickering was able to hold his Commonwealth as well as the European titles simultaneously. Pickering was able to defend his belt three times more, namely in the fight against Juan Garcia Martin in May 2004 and Miguel Mallon in June 2005 The latter win took the place of Madrid. Between the defences on May 8, 2005, was an eight-round win over the former British as well as European champion Noel Wilders. Pickering placed his belts in the ring when on October 28, 2005, he took on the newly-crowned British champion Michael Hunter for the belt that he has never lost in the boxing ring. In a highly entertaining fight Pickering ended up going home empty and beaten, settling a majority decision to suffer his fourth defeat of his career in a fight that was held in Hunter’s backyard in his home, the Borough Hall in Hartlepool. Pickering bounced back from his loss by winning against French professional Frederic Bonifai and with Hunter opting to fight to defend an IBF World title he found himself in the fight for the vacant title. The fight of 11 November 2006 was held at Dublin with Ireland’s Bernard Dunne lift the belt by winning unanimously after 12 rounds.

Between those victories came a loss for the third time in his career for Pickering traveling into the Canary Islands to challenge Spaniard Alejandro Monzon and dropping a split decision. On February 8, 2003, Pickering was a contender for his vacant Commonwealth super bantamweight title . He eventually won the title, beating Kenyan Duncan Karanja to take the title. Pickering knocked out Carr at the end of the third round of the Braehead Arena in Glasgow to go home from Scotland with both titles. Another defense of his Commonwealth title was held on October 24, 2003, with Pickering keeping the belt taking on Ghana’s Alfred Tetteh at the York Hall.
