The Canadian premiere of The Phantom of the Opera was held at the restored Pantages Theatre on September 20, 1989. Susan Cuthbert played Christine twice per week, and Caine’s alternate, Christine. It ran for just more than ten years and broke all box office records in advance ticket sales. To make her North American operatic debut, she was a member of the Canadian Opera Company in Lulu’s title role. This resulted in offers from many international opera companies, including Claudio Monteverdi and Peter Maxwell Davies. Producer Garth Drabinsky pursued Caine aggressively to reprise the role in Toronto after the rights to Phantom were acquired in Canada. Andrew Lloyd Webber was a huge fan of Caine’s portrayal as Christine in the London production and strongly recommended she play the role. Caine was close to signing a contract for starring in another West End production at the time. She ultimately chose Phantom, and she moved to Toronto. In early 1989, she also visited New York for principal cast rehearsals with Hal Prince.
In May 2007, Caine released Leading Ladies, a collection of songs paying tribute to past “Leading Ladies of the British Musical Theatre Stage”, from Gertrude Lawrence to Julie Andrews, with her then-collaborator and vocal coach Gerald Martin Moore on piano and vocals, playing a selection of their leading men, including Noël Coward.
